The creation of no homo
for the photo project inspired by the ironic and rebellious conceptual artist, barbara kruger, i decided to base my work off of the word homophobia. because i have an issue with men being extremely frightened that every gesture they do will lead to the accusation that they are homosexual, i wanted to speak about it. my original idea was to make it funny with the use of the phrase “no homo.” “no homo” is frequently and defensively used in my generation, neighborhood, and specifically, my friend group.
02
Gaye v the allegations
my idea for this project was taken from a point in my thesis for multimedia thinking. i saw “beat the allegations” and immediately thought of a courtroom situation where someone is trying very hard to deny anything “sus.” in trying so hard to not look homosexual, it almost feels homophobic. i took this and made it into a funny, dark-humor-themed story. thus the beginning of ian michael (i.m for short) gaye’s story, where he is being faced with evidence from his past of “questionable activities” like eating hot dogs and complimenting men.
03
male gaze
the meaning of “the male gaze” from my understanding is a camera view that caters to the men’s pov, the men including the character, the viewer, and the director, of a woman/women. it is usually done to sexualize and objectify the woman/women within the film. with my project, i wanted to use the pov of a homophobe- what they really see when they see gay people, what they think when they see gay people, what they feel. the pov was to be of a man viewing, looking at, gazing at gay men- the male gaze. the use of the word gaze is also a play on what my topic focuses on which is gays.
04
the sound of homophobia
for this project in order to convey my concept, I decided to focus on a few different aspects of the meaning of homophobia, mainly disgust, discomfort, and hatred. Religion often times plays a very large role in people’s disgust, discomfort, and hatred with homosexuality and those in the homosexual communities.
